The Texas Chute Out's Final Fall

© Dallas Morning News
Blowing up rides is so hot right now, no?  We recently saw Cedar Point use the pyrotechnic method to bring down the Space Spiral, and today Six Flags Over Texas did a similar job on their famous Texas Chute Out ride.

The park had previously announced that the ride, along with the Flashback roller coaster, would be removed before the 2013 season when the world's tallest Star Flyer, dubbed the Texas SkyScreamer, will open.  That ride will stand an amazing 400 feet in the sky, twice as high as the Chute Out.

The Texas Chute Out was one of only two parachute rides still operating in the U.S., now the only one standing is at Six Flags Great Adventure.  It looks like the ride fell directly onto the former location of the Flashback coaster, which has already been removed from the park.

For the video of the ride coming down, check out the Dallas News, and also for some neat shots of the rubble afterward check out this gallery at the Star-Telegram.

Can you believe that Legoland Florida has been open a year already?  Well, almost a year I should say - the park's official first birthday is October 15th, and the park is planning quite a celebration.

For starters, they're offering 5,000 tickets at 50% off the gate price, which is quite an amazing savings if you are visiting that day.  Another sweet treat planned are cupcakes for the first 5,000 visitors.  Mmmm, cupcakes.

Legoland Florida’s Prize Patrol will also be out roaming the property with hundreds of gifts and will sporadically surprise guests throughout the day with them.  Some of the items they are giving away include:

·         Meet & Greet with a Master Model Builder
·         Tours of the Model Shop
·         Free Food Vouchers
·         Free Hero Passes for front-of-the-line access to rides
·         Free Single Day Admission Tickets to Legoland Florida
·         Free Standard Annual Passes which includes unlimited 12 month access to Legoland Florida
·         Free Merlin Annual Passes USA which includes unlimited 12 month access to Legoland Florida, Legoland Water Park and all Merlin US attractions throughout the USA, free parking and more

Legoland Florida will be open from 10 to 5 on the 15th - sounds like quite a party!

New Mack Launched Coaster for Liseberg in 2014

To contact us Click HERE

Sweden's Liseberg Amusement Park started hinting a few days ago that they had a big announcement coming up... but I had no idea just how big it was!

Carefully study this track layout... it is twisted!
Yes... turns out we're talking Mack double launch, 4,445 foot long coaster, currently named Projekt Helix.  Not clear yet on what the final name of the ride will be, but by my standards Project Helix is pretty cool on its own!

Taking full advantage of the hillside that Lisebergbanan did when it opened in 1987, Projekt Helix will start near the top of the hill and use gravity for just a bit before launching up into a huge overbanked turn, and then the journey down the hill begins.  The given height of the ride is 135 feet, though I have to wonder if that's the difference from the highest to the lowest part, as Projekt Helix is most definitely a terrain coaster.

As the train dives down the hillside it first encounters an enormous pretzel loop, seen above.  These are the first two inversions of the six found on the ride and coexist with four air-time hills and plenty of other twists, turns, and helices.  The maximum speed on Projekt Helix will be 62 miles per hour, making it the fastest ride at Liseberg.  The coasters travels up and down the hillside several times, extending over and past several of the park's other rides.

Projekt Helix will utilize the train design that Mack created for Blue Fire at Europa Park, which have had some excellent reviews ever since they debuted.  Above is some concept art for the coaster's trains, carrying on the green theme that matches the ride's track.

The park has also released this slick video of the ride, which shows off much of the $23 million ride's layout.  This is going to be one incredible ride when it opens, and I'm already looking forward to watching it built!

SeaWorld San Diego Planning New Entrance

The current entrance area at SeaWorld San Diego
SeaWorld San Diego just finished their busy Summer season with the debut of their new roller coaster, Manta, but they're already looking toward the park's next big expansion.

The park has announced that they will embark on an 18 month construction project that will transform the park's entrance area into Explorer's Reef, an immersive undersea themed area.

Highlighted by a giant translucent wave structure, guests will feel as if they enter the ocean and head undersea upon arrival, and discover four new touch-pool exhibits in the three acre development.  Guests will be able to get up close and personal with horseshoe crabs, bamboo sharks, and rays in the new pools.

© SeaWorld San Diego
The new plaza will take into consideration the fact that more guests are arriving to the park with admission tickets already in hand, and the need for ticket booths is slowly declining.  Guests will also find it much easier to schedule special programs, dinner reservations, and other special add-ons once they arrive.

Construction on Explorer's Reef will begin this December, and continue to March of 2014.  The park will use a temporary entrance while the transformation takes place.

The Future of Rye Playland Announced

To contact us Click HERE

Finally, a decision has been made on the future of Rye Playland. However, for those of us who are fans of the property as an amusement park may find some disappointment in the plan that has been chosen.

Out of the final three plans that were considered for the future of the county owned park, the choice has been made to move forward with Sustainable Playland - a letter of intent was signed today during a big to-do at the park.  Sustainable Playland is a non-profit that organized to come up with a future for the park designed by locals that extends the use of the property from an amusement park to a park with amusements, as they put it.

The other two plans were from Central Amusements, part of Zamperla Rides, who operate Coney Island's Luna Park, and Standard Amusements, a new company that is led by Jack Falfas, former COO or Cedar Fair.

© Sustainable Playland Inc.
To get right to the point, the new plan will see a considerable amount of rides removed from the park, with a focus on keeping historic ones.  The amusement area will be pay-as-you-go, and quite different from it is now.  From Sustainable Playland's site, in their original proposal documents, regarding amusements at Rye Playland:

"The space allotted to this component of the Park has been significantly reduced, resulting in a reduction in the number of rides from 46 to 33. Those rides that will remain are largely targeted to smaller children, including 21 kiddy rides and 12 family/low thrill rides.  As a result, the potential market for the amusement component will be impacted. In order to estimate the attendance for a kiddy-oriented amusement area, estimates were made which compare a family/low thrill experience (with a smaller percentage of kiddy rides) with a kiddy-oriented experience such as the one planned for Playland Park. Based on these estimates, a reduced, kiddy-oriented amusement component could attract approximately 380,000 visitors a year."

As this was from the original proposal, I can't be sure if they've changed their view on any specifics, but the plan to reduce the rides is definitely moving forward.

© Sustainable Playland Inc.
Basically, if you look at the park from above the left side of the park will remain, and the entire right side of the park will be cleared of rides with the exception of the park's Carousel.  The right side of the park will be used as part of the Great Lawn Zone.  The investment that is listed in today's press release mentions upwards of $7 million planned to be spent on the amusements aspect of the park.

Rides that will be removed, just judging from these images, include: The S&S Double Shot, Playland Plunge shoot-the-chutes, Log Flume, Catch a Wave, Yo-Yo (relocated), Thunderbolt, Kite Flyer (relocated), Sky Flyer, Wipeout, a family coaster, dark ride, and others that I'm probably missing.

It looks as though the park's coaster Super Flight, a Zamperla flying coaster, will stay, although that's without a doubt the first ride I would vote off the island if it were up to me.

The park's Kiddyland will be kept, and renovated as part of the plan, which makes sense since kiddie and family rides will be the focus.  The park's Old Mill, Derby Racer, Kiddy Coaster, Whip, and Dragon Coaster (among others) will be retained, thankfully.

Since Sustainable Playland is a non-profit they will act as a holding company for the greater Playland area, and hire other groups to run the different facilities on the property.  Naturally, one of these will be the amusements, and that sounds like it will be run by Mega Funworks.  Mega Funworks looks to have a solid track record with water parks, but I do not see any amusement park history listed for them.

The right side of the park will be cleared of rides.
Speaking of water parks, and odd thing about today's announcement is that many news sources used the addition of a "water park" in their headlines, only there doesn't seem to be any water park included in the plan.  There is, however, a small water play area in the original plans adjacent to the beach, but that is by no stretch of the imagination  a water park.  Hopefully plans changed and perhaps that is due to the fact that Mega Funworks has successful water park experience.

The overall plan calls for plenty of new features around the park, part of the overall plan to make the area a year round entertainment zone with a dramatically reduced focus on Rye Playland as an amusement park.  New indoor and outdoor fields will be added, the indoor ice rink will be renovated, an outdoor one will be added, the great lawn will be built to hold concerts and events, and new restaurants will be added.  The release states that $34 million will be spent to make these changes.

Hmm, the right side of the park is quite different than the left.
Depending on when a formal contract with the government can be signed the amusement park may or may not operated in its current state in 2013.  Either way, it is planned to be open, per the news release.  The new fields and other developments will be phased, so these change will by no means take place all at once.

Someone buy me, please!
So after such a long time with the future of the park up in the air how did this all turn out?  Well, not that bad actually - at least I think so.  Well, at least it could have been worse anyway.  Some plans had the amusements totally retired from the property, which would have been a serious shame.  The park's highlights for me when we visited are all being saved, sans the Log Flume, at least.  And to be honest, the difference between the original section of the park (left) and the section that it expanded into over the years (right) is quite drastic.

If the entire property picks up perhaps we will see new rides added - keeping expectations realistic (in the family oriented sector I would assume) will be important, though.  We will never see a big new roller coaster added, but that's no so bad if it means we can still take a spin on the Dragon or hold on for dear life at the Derby Racer.

Skycoaster Popularity Still Soaring

© Ride Entertainment Group
Seven years since their purchase of the Skycoaster attraction, Ride Entertainment Group is still seeing continued success and popularity of the up-charge amusement park attraction.  Kennywood was the first park to build a permanent Skycoaster, and since then they have popped up at parks around the globe and on six continents.

So far there will be two new Skycoaster installations in 2013, one of which will be at Wet'n'Wild in Sydney, Australia.  It will be the first to feature an all new design that uses significantly less steel than any other ride of its size, which will be 251 feet tall.

© Ride Entertainment Group
The engineering that went into the new design of the Skycoaster was a must in order to meet the tough wind codes found in Australia.  Ride Entertainment Group is particularly proud of the work that went into the new design, and sees it as a major plus for the future of the rides.

On the greater future of Ride Entertainment Group CEO Ed Hiller says “Ride Entertainment started as a sales company and has grown into a full service amusement park business with sales, revenue share, installation and operations divisions.  We have seen a lot of change over the past few years and I look forward to continued business growth throughout the industry.”

I'll be excited to see the new design once it goes up in Australia.  If I recall correctly my first Skycoaster was at Cedar Point, and I've had the opportunity to try out quite a few more since then.  The thrill of the plunge is quite addicting!

Well, after a Holiday Hiatus, we're back! First thing I want to do before getting to some editorials is to catch up on some of the bigger news.

So, the Transformers ride is opening. This is considered big news, so here's a recap. It's basically a new version of the Spiderman ride in my viewpoint, but I suppose this is a good backup plan for Universal if and when they ever lose their Marvel license to Disney. Slashfilm reported recently that the attraction vehicle is an actual transformer. Your car is a character. My good friends over at Topless Robot had this to say:

Transformers: The Movie: the Ride is just about ready to open in Universal Studios Singapore, and one of the local news stations did this report on what getting to the ride will be like. I feel like it's notable for two reasons:
1) That it could take up to 1.5 hours of waiting in line to actually get on Transformers: The Ride. The idea that anyone would wait up to 90 minutes for a ride based on
Bayformers -- unless they were some sort of war criminal, and this was their court-mandated punishment -- depresses me to no end.
2) On the other hand, as the newslady is happy to point out, the walls surrounding the queue will be full of buttons to press and switches to flip, so that people can "entertain" themselves while waiting. By pressing buttons and hitting switches. Like developing infants do with toys.

As harsh as that sounds, I can't disagree. However, I'm sure I'll be amazed with the technology once it opens. You can make up your own mind by viewing this video.

In other news:

-I should point out that we have seen a new type of ticketing system put into use that could possibly eliminate turnstiles.

-Coney Island is celebrating its roots with some new construction work.

-Kennywood sold Pitfall, so could a new ride be on the way?

-TDS celebrates its 10 birthday just in time for the holidays.

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! And if you didn't, it could be worse. The Pilgrims had to catch their own turkey. I'll leave you with a look at what that might have looked like, courtesy of Sally Dark Rides.

Hello readers!

First of all, I definitely need to apologize for the lack of updates. I've been ridiculously busy with other things over the past several months, and I regret not updating this sooner. Sadly, I simply haven't had time. Thank you to those who have continued to visit and check on the site - I appreciate it greatly.

On that note, I'm hoping to get the site going again with news, Impressions, photos, and other possible new features. What better day to pick back up than on our one year anniversary! That's right, we've been up for one year today (even if we have been gone for several months), and that's an achievement I'm quite proud of. Thanks once again for your readership.

So, what have we been doing? Spring break this year included stops at Thorpe Park and Disneyland Paris, so expect to see reviews for those up sometime in the near future. On top of that, I still have one to finish off from last year; again, oops. Right now, I've just uploaded 100 photos from Thorpe to our Facebook page, including lots of pictures of The Swarm. Head on over and check it out, and maybe go ahead and like our page while you're at it ;)

I'll be sure to post as often as possible, but I can't guarantee daily updates right now. As always I'll do my best. For now, enjoy the Thorpe Park photos, and thanks for sticking with us!

It's Here

2012 is finally here. After a year of fun and memories, another awaits us. Last year, I was so bad about my new years resolutions, I forgot what they were. This year, I'm going to write them down and remember to do them.
  • Do my devotions everyday
  • Take more photos
  • Practice my guitar everyday
  • Savor every moment
Jeremiah 29:11-"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord. "plans prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
What are your new years resolutions? To catch up on some posting, I'm going to post a photo from every month, and share a story to go along with it. Sound like fun?
January
This photo makes me laugh. I was trying to get everyone to jump, and nobody wanted to. I was trying to get their attention but I just couldn't. I accidentally took this photo and it ended up being one of the best candid shots this year!
FebruaryIn February I got way more interested in photography, I was trying out techniques, and having ten photo shoots a day! For this photo, my friend and I were out walking around ALL day photographing each other. We thought we should make an artificial puddle to splash in. We had so much fun going back and forth taking pictures. We got really wet and made lots of memories.

March
March was a month of people photos. I got so into taking pictures of kids and fun. This photo was so hard to get. But this little girl was not the deal. The stinking hula hoop would not stay still! No kidding right?

April
This picture was so much fun to make. We used the self timer and the boys and I went outside to get these shots. The expressions were fantastic and water splashes are pretty cool in pictures.

I had to do two photos for April because this was when I first started using manual mode! Only a few days after. The flowers were in bloom and the next-door neighbors tree hung over our yard. I pointed the camera upward, waited for the beep and snapped away, also capturing some beautiful bokeh.

May
In our old house, a little bunny we gave our bread crusts to always came by. Finally I got out there with the telephoto lens and captured some great bunny photos. We claimed his name was Bun-Bun.

June
We had so much happen in June, I also have to do two pictures. There's much to our month of June and I can't even share all of it. The cupcake one above is Toby's party. (It was a little late considering his birthday is in January)

My amazing cousins from Arizona came to visit us right after I came home from Summer Camp, where I got baptized. The second day they were here, we had a huge water balloon fight. Then for photos we squeezed water balloons over our heads. (You know, a lot of times to get the right photo, we get wet. If you haven't noticed)

July
Fourth of July of course! And it was my first time photography sparklers! How did I do?

My cousin Selah came for a visit and oh...More water. We decided to go outside and play with the hose. We. Got. SOAKED.

August
The same friend I mentioned before in this post came over again and we stayed out all day taking photos. She had a new camera and so I was teaching her about all the settings. Oh it was so much fun!

September
We headed to California where my birthday, seeing redwoods, and camping took place. We also went to a few parts of the Pacific ocean. This particular day, I was standing back taking pictures. Maddy and Toby were standing by the shore and a huge wave came. Thank goodness Toby ran back, he would've been pulled in. No joke. It caught Maddy's legs and she fell to her knees. The power of the wave would've taken Toby in, we're thankful that it was Maddy. Because she was okay, just really wet.

OctoberWe headed off to go see the cousins in Arizona. They have a pool in their backyard. I swam 4 times a day, everyday. It was so hot, and the pool was so refreshing. Let me just say, I got 10x tanner.

November
I am so surprised how well this photo turned out. I was lying on the ground with my shutter speed really slow and I finally got it. We were putting up our Christmas tree pretty early (not for us but maybe for you).

December
Christmas of course! And I got my very own, laptop!

We had an amazing year and we hope to have an even better one next year. Have a great new year everybody!

one morning at 7:30 a.m. there was a crispness in the air. there was a breeze. the sky was grey and blanketed with clouds. it was finally autumn. we rushed to get our sweatshirts and stepped out into the cool air. we stepped across the dew-covered lawn and sat down. my brother and i just sat there in silence. listening to the many birds in the trees. feeling the chill overtake our bare toes. that morning, it officially was deemed autumn. it was beautiful.

Wet 'n' Wild Coming Back to Las Vegas

To contact us Click HERE

The return of Wet'n'Wild to Las Vegas!  Many folks are quite pleased about the news, and even better the plan for the park is already well underway - to the point where the park is actually already being built.

Located in Summerlin, the water park will actually be a renamed and re-branded Splash Canyon water park, which was announced some time ago.  That park was slated to open this past Summer, but delays had it pegged for a 2013 opening.  Now re-branded as Wet'n'Wild Las Vegas, the park will be run by Village Roadshow, a large media brand out of Australia who owns and operates several theme and water parks.

The new park will cost $50 million to construct, and feature 25 different slides when it opens next Memorial Day.  Several of the slides are quite modern, including a Rattler and Constrictor, both from WhiteWater West.
Other attractions include a massive wave pool, lazy river, water play structure, and other towers including racing and high thrill plunge slides.  For a full preview, check out this flyover video that the park has released.
Village Roadshow also has water parks in Arizona and Hawaii.

Holiday World's First Halloween Celebration

To contact us Click HERE

Holiday World has successfully made it through their first run of Happy Halloween Weekends, the theme park's new family-friendly Halloween event.  The event marks the first time that the park, which contains several holiday themed areas, is celebrating the Halloween season.

In addition to almost all of the park's rides being open for guests, there's also plenty of unique Halloween themed attractions to experience.  Holidog's 3-D Halloween Adventures is a new walk through attraction in which guests help Holidog find his candy.  I know how important Halloween candy is to me, so I can certainly understand Holidog's plight.

A scene from Holidog's 3-D Halloween Adventures
The park has also created two corn mazes, one smaller one for little kids and an enormous one that's pretty impressive looking from the air.  There's new live entertainment, decorations throughout the park, plenty of family activities like face painting and trick-or-treating, and each Saturday night ends with a laser light show.  Sundays end with a gigantic dance party being held by Kitty Claws!

All the fun will be held at Holiday World on weekends through October 28th.

While unrelated to the park's Halloween events, this article does mention that the park will announce some new additions for 2013 in a couple weeks - though do not look for huge news.  Instead, the parks is already planning big things for 2014 and beyond, good news for us fans!

When Six Flags announced the new Bonzai Pipelines waterslide tower addition last month, slated for both Six Flags New England and Six Flags America, many (including myself) figured that the manufacturer was one that had recently provided the chain with additions.  Turns out that the pair of slide towers will actually be provided by SplashTacular, and be the first installations of their new Down Under design.

The towers will stand almost 70 feet tall, and feature six separate body slides that each start with a "DrenalineDrop" freefall start.  Up at the top the riders in the capsules will be able to stare at each other while waiting for their turn to fall, something that should be really entertaining.

After the drop the riders speed through 50 feet of translucent fiberglass, which allows guests near the tower to see the riders in action.  Each slide's path is slightly different than the others, making repeat rides a must.  The different colors of the tubes will help create favorites among guests, no doubt.

Welcome to Halloween Haunt 2012, only on weekends at Kings Island.

The International Street fountains never looked more ominous. When the breeze is right, the mist and fog combine to make the brightest street lights dim.
The Fright Feast Meal offers Montgomery Inn Pulled Pork BBQ, Grilled Chicken Breasts, and lots of fixins, including Potato Salad, desert, and drinks. A great way to fortify yourself for an evening of being scared. You need lots of energy to shriek loudly.

This interesting prop lit up with a moving face, very creepy greets you as you arrive for dinner!

The lights of summer have been replaced with something a little more subtle, and combined with the fog, the whole park is transformed.

This poor soul didn't know which way to turn, but it sure is a neat costume.

The repurposing of the "Crypt" building is new for 2012. Some parts of the old theming were kept, but alas, not the old video screen. Beware of the mix of human looking props and actual scaractors lurking in the shadows, it is you they have been waiting, for years and years.
Here is some of Tomb Raider's theming, but with new lighting and props.

Here you can participate in Madame Fatale's Dead Inn Feast, where you can experience excellent dining while being served by the creepiest wait staff ever. After you eat, Madame Fatale or one of her minions will guide you through the Cavern of Terror.

Urgent Scare is enough to terrorize anyone who hates hospitals and doctors. Something has gone terribly wrong with the treatment of the plague patients here, and you must get out before you too become infected.

The spirits of Phantom Theatre reappear annually for Haunt, but now they are a little bit more ghostly. Good to see old friends again.
Even the Easter Bunny is scary in Holiday Horror. He, along with the symbols of many other celebratory days throughout the year, take a sinister turn in this maze.
The full moon has all the citizens of the Wolf Pack howling, and after seeing the larger than life props inside, you will be also as you flee in terror back to the light. Utilizing the old Son of Beast station, there is a spot where you can get a souvenir photo taken to show your friends how brave you are.

The Graveyard Shift show features may rock 'n roll classics, like "We are a monster band" and "Abracadabra." A fun place to rest before striding forth once again into the night, only to be scared all over again.

Here "Patch" gets his Love Shock during the creation process.

Hot Blooded proves that you need to be careful who you bite and who you let bite you. Deliciously graphic, if you don't like blood, this show isn't for you.

Blood Drums starts off with powder on their instruments, and everything is set up right in the middle of Action Zone. These explosive percussion performers show that music is where you look for it, and they obviously spent a lot of time in an industrial junkyard, having kegger parties.
So here is just a taste of all the ghouish fun available at Kings Island during the Haunt. In the words of the Graveyard Shift, "Come on ghouls, lets get it on," an go to Kings Island for one last blast of Halloween fun this year. Thanks to the PR Department, the many scaractors, and everyone else at Kings Island who helped us bring you this story.
